I have a couple of extra Lowers that I want to make my grandson his first deer shooter.

    6.5 Grendel

    350 Legend

    Which one?

Maxx doesn't need to answer because he misses everything.

He doesn't miss. He just can't find them!

I’ve only got experience with the Grendel but I like it. Everything I’ve shot with it expired post haste. The legend might be easier to find ammo for, though. During the recent drought, I saw it everywhere with little Grendel on the shelf. I reload, so it’s a moot point for me however.

No experience w the legend but the 6.5 is a soft shooter and almost always seems to leave em DRT.

Hornady 123 gr SST performs really well outta mine.

I know he’s just starting, so I couple of things I’d take into consideration:
          - shorter distance shots I’d prefer the 350 legend…I could be wrong but it looks like it’d open them up more too
          - longer shots I’d prefer the reach of the 6.5 G, it will be a more versatile gun in the end as I’ve read that the 350 is ‘limited’ to about 250 yds

I don’t think you can wrong with either, especially for a beginning hunter. Personally I’d rather more blood if he’s going to be shoulder shooting.

Kid and I just put a second 6.5g together yesterday. He went between that and 6mm arc. He spent his money on parts for another Grendel.

Shooting 123s out if a 12" barrel, suppressed, he killed one pig and spilt lung from a second in one shot. I personally haven't killed anything with it other than an armadillo. But it shoots good

He bought 6 boxes of ammo with gift cards Monday at local academy.

If you decide to go 6.5 asc mags for the win. Whatever he bought (Israeli) were junk. They dropped and loaded well but followers stuck. The asc won't drop but they feed. Given we aren't fighting with them I don't see an issue

I know nothing about a Grendel other than it's Bill Alexander's brain child. I put together one of His 50 Beowulf's many years ago and it was a Thumper.

The Legend is like shooting a .223 IMHO. I dont know what they are advertised at but I wouldnt shoot it over 150 yards. I think folks try to make supermagnums out of everything.

I have an AR chambered in it as well as 2 Ruger Youth Rifles. It kills everything shot with it with authority. Granted, we are talking shots from 25 to 75 yards most of the time. I have stretched over 100 on hogs and was a non issue. If I dont get an exit hole....I dont need it or ita at its max range.

Lots of factory ammo was loaded wrong in the beginning. I shot some of it, and it ruins brass. Have 8 boxes of federal with split cases.....unfired. They wont warranty the rounds.

I dont know if you reload, but it you do and for an AR. Stay away from Winchester Ammo. I belive it is loaded with their flagship 296 powder. It will gootch your brass as an Ar unlocks before the pressure drops with that powder.

It uses 9mm or .355 projos instead of .357. Lots of pissing and whining and gnashing of teeth from reloaders about it.
I cast my own bullets, so it doesnt bother me. Reloading data is pretty limited. I use maximum published loads in .357 MAXIMUM data as a starting point. Its basically a lengtheded .357 Max, without the rim and sized .355.

Some AR barrels are .357-358. Leftovers from the Wildcat 357AR

Grendel IIRC was supposed to be " Long Range" when they came out with it as well as the 6.8
I call bullshit on airing out short action (AR 15) calibers on anything other than paper.

Then again, I shot a deer at 346 yards with a 6.5 Manbun handload and consider that to be about max effective range on deer....and you had better not want a pass thru at that.

Sure it can be done, but not repeatedly by a kid.

                Also....If you reload:
Be aware that many dies makers have a ROLL crimp die with their sets. Throw it away and order a taper crimp. Roll crimps dont work none too good with rounds that headspace off the case mouth.

Thats pretty much all I know about that.

For a 100 yard deer feeder gun, id do 350 legend. It will give a more reliable blood trail than any of the others. Will kill as well or better. Downsides are slightly more recoil and obviously range limitations. No matter what you get, go with an adjustable gas block. Every AR should have one.

I had a number of kids shoot deer with a 12" grendel. All made good shots and nothing ran far. But I got rid of it because damage seemed minimal and blood severely lacking. Felt it was too borderline for my taste.

Teach them how to shoot first, den you don’t have to worry about the boolit.

                          Aim small, miss small.
