  • Looks like "we" might have a recession this time

The last two down turns were supported my hurricane recovery money. Locally we really didn't notice the economy turning worse.

Now, as of last week, In Vista reported that it was closing. Today the Inland Papermill reports that it is closing. That about 1400 local jobs.

Chevron is building the new facility but the operator and maintenance jobs will still be a while coming.

What’s the old saying, “When housewives and cops are predicting economic doom, the worst part is over”?

Invista closing one plant that employees 1400 of their 122000 employees isn’t exactly Black Monday kind of needle movement.

It always sucks when people are losing their jobs. Most times I don’t feel bad for folks and their predicaments because it’s often about the choices they make. But getting laid off is a real bummer.

And he lives in East Texas, the only place in the country where getting laid off the day before deer season starts is considered sound economic policy.

Paper mill that closed is the International Paper mill in Orange. Containerbord facilty that employs about 900. Facility takes over 2 million tons of pulpwood every year. It will be a ripple that will affect timber industry in all the south. Potential for 20-30 logging contractors to lose their jobs. Could have a major effect on wood prices in the basin. Existing mills will be able to drop their price even further.
Union in the mill and the current government are to thank for this development.

Pulp wood is worthless currently, pine $2/t hardwood $2/ton stumpage.

Where are you located? Southeast texas stumpage is much better than that currently. IP closing is going to hurt the market though.
I made $5 ton on a private tract I sold on both hardwood and pine.
I work for a large timber investor and pine has been pretty close to what it has been for 15-16 years. Hardwood changes much more but most of time you can make at least $3-$4 a ton. Wasn’t long ago we were making $10-$15 on hardwood pulpwood.

I hope all the pulp wooders go out of biz for a while.
