  • TPWD draws - the Chap!

Well i have screwed up and drew the Kerrville Schreiner bow hunt for deer and exotics with 12 points, which overlaps the Chaparral WMA Gun deer either sex I drew with 24 points. I have been applying for that tag for more than half my life and its the first drawn hunt I ever applied for. Clearly going to the Chap as it's arguably the most coveted hunt in the entire system and definitely most coveted whitetail hunt.

Anybody hunted the Chapparal WMA before?

Oh my! That’s a winner for sure. I’ve seen some monster bucks taken off that WMA.

I hunted it 12 years ago.

That said, I know some guys who hunted it in the last 5. Being your hunt is with a bang stick I guess. If it was the archery hunt, I'd go to kerrville and shoot axis

We went standby archery years ago and got in. Pretty tough hunt with archery gear. Some areas are so thick you can't walk. I had nightmares of trying to track an arrow hit deer. They have senderos you can hunt with a rifle and hopefully you'll have some rutting activity to get them on their feet. I wouldn't pass a chance to bang an actual 150+ whitetail for the price.
The good news is we are 0-fer, so no big decisions on where we are going and when. Fingers still crossed for a muley draw......

I keep drawing OIL tags at the worst possible time. I am happy to go but dammit man. Guess it just takes one, but outlook not good

                This from the CHAP WMA:

The property is still under recovery from the extreme drought and freeze events in 2020-2022. And, unfortunately, last year's drought was negatively compounded by this summer's extreme heat. We have not flown our aerial survey yet, but feedback from neighboring properties and comparable surveys in the area suggest that we did not receive the population recovery that we had hoped for this year.

Guess I missed this the first time, congrats. Good problem to have I guess. I always try to make sure I don’t have overlaps, if possible.

I put in for 9 hunts this year, 5 of those had 20 points or more, and drew nothing yet again.

So does this mean they're canceling your hunt? Will you get to use it next year?

I haven't pulled a turkey hunt in years. I'm convinced the points don't matter. I used to pull at least one turkey hunt every 3 or 4 years. It's now year 7, I think. Put in for 4 different ones, meanin Ill probably draw two of them set for the same times.

Probably cancel the hunt and loose pref points for that category.
