  • Timber Turkeys

They are hard to kill in the timber. Snuck in this am. Stay back a good ways. Had birds gobbling all over. Around 7:30 we had one come in close he had to be within 60-70 yards but it’s so thick they have to be within 30. He wouldn’t commit any closer just sat and gobbled constantly. We never saw him.

I was with my 13 year old daughter so I wasn’t comfortable backing up 20 and calling leaving her by herself. I got aggressive on the call figuring he would commit or leave he left.

There is a nicer spot that is more open but we couldn’t get to it because they were roosting to close. Going to take my oldest out this week and get in the same area. I can back up and see if that works. I am also going to come in from a different angle and use some terrain to get to a spot they seem to hang up on.

They always hang up right over a ridge on us.

Interesting. I don’t have one of those.

obviously on public land it can attract other hunters and possibly be dangerous. it also might run off jakes not wanting to take an ass whipping again, but using one on hung up birds has worked for me at least 5-6 times.

What do you have? We are on private so I am not worried about other hunters. They tend to hang up here a lot and I think it’s cause they can’t see far.

I also stopped using decoys in the timber. They have hung up on those a bunch of times for me

believe mine is an HS Strut, bought from academy I think. had it several years now. nothing special about it, twist one end open and shake it. very easy to use. twist it back closed so it doesn't make any noise while walking or moving around

What state are you hunting, public or private?

Easterns are nothing like rios, especially if they have been pressured.

Less is more with them and you got to be in an area they are coming to.

Also get good at all the subtle quite turkey sounds like wheel wheels, purs and bubble clucks. Use those more than yelping.

Iowa private pretty sure no pressure on these birds. Was pretty soft the entire time. I think if we had time he would have came in.

Daughter had a bad stomach ache and needed to get to the b room so I pushed it a bit
