  • Help me spend some money

I have an urge to spend money on something that I will probably never use.

That being said, a bit of back story.

My son, and to an small extent myself are friends with the local FFA/AG teacher. He has a pretty respectable and getting more and more respectable every day ag mech program.

We were drinking a few weeks ago and talking about the program and I mentioned that I would be interested in supporting the program because I think it's worth while.

He called me a couple of days ago and told me that when the new school year started that he thought he would have some kids interested in building a custom smoker set up.

He also told me that if I would supply all the material(minus consumables) that they would build it, Show and after the shows were over it would be mine.

So give me some ideas. If you were going to build an off set on a trailer what would you want on it. I'm thinking at least an off set and a santa maria

I have a spare 16" trailer and obviously all the raw materials.

    GIve me some ideas

Just insist that they fill the old propane/butane tank with water whilst cutting it. Let them dream uo and construct whateva.

I could purchase it from you and park it in front of my neighbors house.

Depending on how long propane has been out of it,water isn't needed. That said, I'd assume they wouldn't want to use that because errybody does it and a show pit should be different. Unless you're the guys at TMG pits

That said....wood racks, gas ignition for the wood, lights if it gets a roof, cutting table, water, fold out shade for people like me to drink beer under if it gets a roof, slide out racks in the cook chamber, shelves to store crap.

This is one a guy from high skool built a few years ago

Griddle surface and a deep fryer along with the sink and prep area if you want it to handle other types of cooking vs only smoking.

Reverse flow, baffle plates to help control hot spots. Does the program have any kind of instrumentation training? Multipoint electronic temperature measurements and maybe even damper/ fan controls are pretty slick.

Definitely water tank and sink. Have the plumbers run some pipe on the side of the firebox for hot water. Wood rack. Storage cabinets for cutting boards, spices, knives and such. The list is pretty long.

Our best friend’s daughter, a sophomore at the local Christian school is on their cookoff team. This was the first year they have done it. This past weekend they placed 8th of 116 teams at State competition in Marble Falls. We used to do all the local cookoffs, even Houston LSR. Does that school have a team? Perhaps you can work with that team for wants, and let them use it for their cookoffs.

Maybe the ability to change how many trays at least on one side if your cook area is big enough. Say chickens on the bottom and if the pit is big enough, the top rack can still hold ribs, brisket or beans.

Course there's always some sprockets, chain and a rotary rack

Something that gets overlooked and while most may not think it's that important, have some sort of jack mechanisms mounted on the corners of the trailer for leveling and stability. Thank me later.
