Who’s been to waterfowl hunt there? What month did you go?
I’d need to at least go in October cause I know my Dad will want to pheasant hunt.
How long are you going for?
It’s pretty hard to do both well. We tried in SD a long time ago. You get up early duck hunt then jump into pheasants. That burns you out pretty quick.
Plus you really need to start scouting and not chasing pheasants if you want to kill ducks.
If you don’t have a dog or you don’t want to pay for a guid pheasants would be out. If you only have one dog good luck you can get 3 days out of one in a row.

My Dads got two young short hairs. He’s no newby to the upland bird game.
Would probably go for 8-9 days. I realize 2 days of that on each end would be used for traveling though.
Pick one or the other if you want to do well. Between scouting, gaining permission, cleaning birds, brushing blinds etc doesn’t leave much time to chase upland unless you’ve already got some bang up spots.
The later the better, just be prepared to deal with weather.
Deer season can make it tough to get permission, especially now with e-posting.
Don’t be a dick and shoot the roost. Sounds obvious, but most guys go up with the same intentions as you described, run out of time / fields to hunt and settle for the water they saw a bunch of birds on.
We did Nebraska more than SD. Went for years for 9 days. Seemed like Nebraska was easier to get permission. Used our labs for pheasant and quail with very good results. But I spent some money buying birds and training for it prior. SD was okay, just had better success in NB. We focused more on the upland than ducks though. Hell I can or at that time could still kill mallards here. We loved getting permission to hunt the abandoned farm house or thicker areas. Easier for four of us and 2 labs to work.
