Will a self drilling screw attach a 2x4 or sheet of osb to angle iron without the need to drill pilot holes in the metal?

  • #2
it should, but the wood may ride up the screw. may have to clamp it down

With a quality screw and something like 1/8 steel and smaller, easy peasy

Self tapping… and drill a small pilot hole first. Or if you’ve got extra screws to burn you can even just use one of them to get it started so when you hit it with the next screw it goes all the way. If you go through the wood then metal a lot of times you’ll wind up burning the tip up.

These. I've done exactly what you're talking about on deer stands. A 5/16 driver or the like is better. Put some ass on it and you won't need a pilot hole. 1/8" drill bits cost more than 20 screws and you will break one. At least

We use the TEKs stainless self drilling screws with rubber washers to affix corrugated fiberglass to stainless unistrut all the time at work. Can’t be shy with it. If you try to go slow, the material work hardens and you are in for a chore trying to get through it.

Yea good luck using the Phillips type head…plan to strip a bunch out.

Definitely get the 5/16 hex head or use thy ass for lots of pressure like QB says

Even though I thought it, I’m glad someone else said it. I’m already viewed as an ass here.

Also, as QB and Flop stated, Phillips head is so last century. So many better options now days

The Phillips head Will work. If you're not an idiot. I can show you. But at the cat said, this thread exists.

Ps...they make those collars that go over the screw. Sometimes I wonder how much manual labor this crew is even capable of

                              Yup.
I use these for putting new floors in trailers. Philips heads and all.
