Who is the resident expert here? I have a creek bottom with all kinds of wildlife running on it and thought it might be a fun project to get the kids to do some trapping and see what they can catch. What's a good beginner set up? Also what do you do if you catch a skunk? just leave and never return?

I’m not a trapper, but have caught a few things. Have you seen Trapper Jake on Netflix….pretty cool documentary.

I caught a skunk in my backyard. I live pretty much in the middle of Lubbock, but there is a big playa lake about 4 blocks away. I have caught a mess of raccoons and possums, too. I let them all go at work. I shot the skunk with my pellet gun. My neighborhood was pretty ripe for a while, seeing as I couldn't see the damn thing in the pitch of night. I think if I killed it with my first shot, he wouldn't have sprayed. If I ever catch another one, I'll wait until I can see to shoot the damn thing.

Cat treats from HEB has been my ticket lately. Sardines work, too. I've caught 52 feral cats over the years, mostly with sardines.

I trapped every winter in my yute. Paid for my first truck from money earned selling hides and from picking up pecans.

Lots of info online or on YouTube these days. Used to have to have an old guy/mentor to teach you the ropes or read Fur Fish and Game or The Trapper and Predator Caller magazine and try to figure it out in your own.

I would buy 2 or 3 #2 coil spring traps and learn how to make some basic hole sets for raccoons using sardines or shad etc for bait. Put it down in the creek bed and you’ll mostly caught coons or possums and not have to mess with a trapped skunk.

The skunks I caught were in field sets for foxes or coyote. Didn’t catch too many so my method for dealing with them was to pop with a 22 from distance and come back the next weekend after the buzzards had cleaned the trap.

You might be a little late this year if trying to keep a hide as the fur will start slipping in 3-4 weeks or so.

I'll put out one of those dog proof traps baited with small marshmallows when the coons start hitting the bird feeders. Works dang good.

These things really work well. I use the marshmallows too with a couple drops of vanilla.

If you use a live trap & get a skunk, leave them in there a couple days to dehydrate & then shoot them at a distance with 410 or 20 gauge bird shot. Won’t stop all the smell, but most of it.

From another site, if you should live trap a skunk, don't shoot it in the head...it will still spray. Instead, shoot it through the lungs. Without air, it cannot spray.

If you can get an atv near it, very gently lay a blanket over the skunk. Then run a hose from the exhaust.

Of course that’s with a live catch wire trap.

We just shoot the damn skunk in the face with whatever.

Have a rope tied to the trap, pre skunk. Sling it out in a pond for a couple of days. Yank it in and dump it out.
