  • Steel Shot

I bought a few cases of the Remington shells when Rogers had them on sale and you got the rebate per box. I finally burned through those and with 2-3 guns I am burning through them quicker than I would like. They seem to shoot really well for us.

I haven't really shop for shells in a few years. Did federal buy the Remington? Any suggestion or just pick the cheapest 3" 3's I can find.

Federal blue box are cheap (in terms of steel shot these days). Not too dirty, pattern well, always go bang. The fiochi shells are another one I would look at for good price/performance.

Of the cheap ones monarch I would pass on. Very very dirty, and I fell that they have some issues on powder loads. Every few rounds there may be a shell that has considerably more recoil/muzzle flash.

Of the new “cool shells” I am not a fan of migra, Apex steel (their heavy weight stuff is good), and Rio (not new by any means, but much more popular past few years).

I don’t have experience with them personally, but one of the guys I hunt with has been shooting 20g estates since teal and bought more. Said they are $130 a case.

Bought a single box of Fiochi they seemed pretty good but I think all they had locally in a case weas #2. I really like 3's for some reason.

Id buy a box of each of the loads you are considering. Put them on a pattern board with your guns. You likely wont see too much difference, but it can sure weed out any that wont.

Everone I know has liked the federal blue box as stated above. Mine are the older version thats dirty. I stacked them deep at $89/case with the free shipping Rogers used to do.

I gave away 2 cases of the Rio Blue steel as not a single one in my party could get a pattern of any kind out of them.

As far as size shot. 1,2,3 dont matter none to me

I really like fiocchi. Their golden waterfowl line is really nice, polished steel shot, sealed crimp and primer. I have had 4 different cases of fiocchi, two of the golden waterfowl and 2 of what used to be called warlock. The warlock has been renamed. It's a 1.2oz load of 3s, I think Rogers carries it. It has the nice shot, but is not all sealed up, it is also less expensive.

              Find the cheapest you can
Then find a choke that patterns it good
Thats the way a brokedik does it

Those kids will be off your dime before you know. Go with Kent Fasteel and spend a few extra bucks, really not that awful vs competitors if you shop.

Who's got time to find shells that aren't there
Experts were the cheapest easiest to find
I just shot one with my new gun and most of the pattern was to the right of center with factory mod choke
I will try to pattern these rios if I can get another piece of cardboard before tube shopping

I always am amazed at all the different responses on these threads. Makes it clear different guns and chokes definitely make a difference. My son and I shoot about 4-5 cases a year. We do best with Rio and Fiocchi. Rio makes a 2 3/4 1 1/8 load of 5’s that I love for teal and wood ducks. Also great on cripples. We have not had good luck with federal of Kent.

Agree with wood duck willy. The Rios always go bang and they're the cheapest you'll find. I'm not buying my son boss bismuth. That said, I even shoot the Rios for the first half of season.

I like the Rio too. They’re cheap and they pattern as well as anything else. The worst shells are black cloud…those are the dirtiest shells I’ve ever put in a gun.
