Full moon and gonna touch 80. Creek time for crappies. I went Friday afternoon to do some electric work on the new sled and noticed this. Called the manufacturer. Spoke to owner who tolt me to add heavier gear oil to the tranny. It just ran out as well. Seals burnt.

Fun times as followed. Jethro rigged a puller off my slide hammer. 13 hrs on motor.
Took too long to pull down as it's the first time I've ever been in one. Ain't no industrial supply houses for seals open in God's country on Saturday after 12 p.m. Guess Ill just wait until monday and have em sent via warranty....if they'll honor it. Closest dealer is 6 hours. I aint fouled out at the brand or manufacturer as shit happens. Just kind of pisser as I should be rakin in the fish right now.

Yeah, I started to drive to DFW after the seals, but said Fug It. I knew I'd be doing my own wrenching with the nearest dealer 6 hours away, just didn't plan on it this soon! I know they'd rather me haul it in to their guys, but I'll have less time in it than the drive, one way to get it done. I will say that the Design and ease of pulling the thing down still impresses me. Its a pretty simple planetary gear set up to get the reverse.

Let me preface this by saying I played with mud motors for a decent amount of time.

The sooner you come to a realization that lawn mower engines were meant to mow lawns, and everything surrounding them in a marine environment is a headache the happier you will be.

Never been into one of those, but I would be asking why the seals have burned out that quick. Something out of alignment/bent?

They stated that I likely ran it in reverse for too long and too hard got them hot. Reverse is the only time the whole Sun and Planet gear come into play as I see it. I didn't see any warning about going hard in reverse. I ran it for the better part of a couple hours on and off running jugs in reverse. Windy AF. And easier to get myself on them.
Motor is new but a year old or a 2022. They claim they went to a heavier oil in their "Transmission" to alleviate said issues as they are known.

Mud motors always gonna take some wrenching to keep working. Lot of folks can’t fix their own stuff and that’s why you’re starting to see more of them for sale.

What items are common to have trouble with? I'd like to have some spares on hand. It took me an hour and 10 minutes to pull it all down, because I had to Jethro rig an adapter of 1/2 inch fine thread to pull that sun gear.....and my welder didn't want to start.

Amazon did have them in stock at the low, low price of $39 each. I ordered a spare set from Grainger at $9

Atm08....I dunno about that statement. They've been around a few years now. Supposedly this engine was made by briggs for marine use. I think that just means they turned up the Rev Limiter in the ECU. The rest of the design looks sound enough. I'm not an engineer though. I just work on all kinds of bastardized equipment and controls.

I always have a spare trim switch and clutch switch, and that’s prolly a safe bet for most motors. Clutch switches aren’t a big deal, as they typically fail in the engaged position so you aren’t left stranded. You should be able to get that switch at your local lawnmower/small engine place. Just keep a wiring diagram handy cause it’s always a cluster fuk swapping one at the boat ramp (I take a pic on my phone).

Other than that, it’s just a lawnmower engine. The 35 Briggs has been around for a while. Keep the oil changed and the motor won’t give you any trouble.

Still on original 2006 belt though
Trim switch mostly because handle hitting floor from road trips ( 16" transom on a prodrive boat )and fking leaking lower unit gasket which is silicone cause mine was before the groove and gasket upgrade is about it except maybe trim unit rusting tight ( old bear unit)if it sets to long but that's easy annual fix . I got my money's worth the first year though....
