  • Watermark retrievers? Other reputable breeders?

Bout a year out from getting a doggo. Wife set on a golden but lab is possible. Her dr/high school friend got a golden from watermark and great family dog not sure if her husband hunts much.

Anyone have experience with these guys or want to reccomend other breeders to put in the consideration pile?

Watermark is owned by Mary Tatum. She was my veterinarian for a long time until she retired a few years ago. Great lady and very serious about Labrador and Golden Retriever breeding. Look up the history on Watermark's The Boss. If there was ever a breeder I would feel comfortable trusting, it would be her. That said, if you seriously want a dog that will hunt, go with a lab. Her Golden's are absolutely beautiful, but I doubt you will be happy with them as hunters.

Depends what you want. You want a family dog or a hunter? Get a lab unless uv trained a Chessie.

Wade cashion with texas duck dogs is who I got silo from. He is excellent with my 2 year old son/lives indoors/and is an exceptional field dog.

There use to be a lady on the other forum that breed and train her labs with chicken salad, I would call her, except we all know Mrs Doe wears the pants at the Nob house and you are getting a Golden.

Worst mistake of my life. Had her. Went up there for a training day and he broke and he got burned on high for about a minute in pain. Pulled him and went on to retrieve thousands. Frick that bitch.

Chessie can do both, and I would argue in lots of cases better.

Most loyal dog in the world. Can be a temperamental SOB to train. Hank is a lot more bitabble than Beaux. Not for first time owners.

Can’t help with Golden’s but Watermark or the also mentioned Wade Cashion owner of Texas Duck Dogs are both outstanding and reputable. Not sure where you live but Blazing Gun Dogs near Houston area is excellent as well and breeds/trains to a specific temperament

I personally know Dr Tatum and have been an owner of a Watermark dog , Watermark's Sister Kate, great retriever showed some early FT promise asa young dog but lost her at a young age due to cancer (pancreas)

And I would argue you would be wrong. I like all sorts of dogs but if god made a perfect animal the Labrador retriever is it. And I have hunted with chessies, goldens, Boykins and some crappy labs.

Andy if you are looking at a Golden the best ones in state (TX) come from Roger and Dr Kaye Fuller (Culbertson DVM) I dont know what they have coming down the pike but she and my brother are LONG LONG time classmates at TAMU and retriever friends, I have known Dr Kaye since I was a teenager....Finding a quality field/field trial Golden is VERY difficult, golden owners are a tight knit bunch and are reluctant to sell their dogs outside their circle , which accounts for the fact that there are few good ones across the country....LMK if I can be of any help
