I’m sure you high rollers have experience. Due to the age of my current units and their issues I’ll be replacing both sooner than later. I’m considering keeping the downstairs unit a traditional system, and converting to a ductless mini split system with three to four inside units for each individual room upstairs. I’ll also be listing the house in a few years, is this a desirable conversion?

The Mitsubishi units we have at work heat as well. Either they sized us wrong or they just don't put out enough cool for this heat, but we have to run a window unit along with the 2 Mitsubishi units to cool our break room.Originally posted by maxx View PostWhat are you going to do for heat?
Duck would know better but I am not sure if VRF is feasible for a house. It may not be cost prohibitive

Our house was built in 1902 & has 12 ft ceilings. We didn't want to change it to be able to put ducts in. We got a double unit on one one side of our house a couple years ago. We still had window units on the other side. This year we put in a triple unit system on the other side & took out the window units. BIG difference in every good way. So far we like them. I just hope they last as good as a regular central unit does. Ours do heat too, but you need ceiling fans to drive that warm air down. Especially if you have ceilings like ours. We have gas heaters too though for really cold times.

Not to rain on your parade.
The biggest complaint that I have with the mini splits; Over the years we have replace whole units that there are no parts for repairs because of supersedes in parts or unit model. The second complaint is drain issues. if you can't gravity drain and have to use a lift pump, get ready for future issues.

I use them at the office, mostly metal buildings.
I figure we replace the whole system about every 5 years.
I still come out a head, I believe.
