Bolivar Peninsula — A trip to the Crystal Beach turned deadly for one Texan. The Houston-area man died after contracting a severe infection from a bacteria naturally present in the water.
Daniel Murphy, 57, of Katy, suffered a cut to his lower leg while visiting July Fourth weekend. He later swam in the water.
"Everything was fine, he wakes up Tuesday morning and his right lower leg was infected and sore so we went to the emergency room and they admitted him into the hospital," said longtime friend Matt Pace.
Doctors diagnosed Dan with Vibrio Vulnificus, a harmful and fast-spreading bacteria naturally found in warm marine waters. The infection was so severe, doctors had to amputate leg below the knee to try to stop the infection.

He died a day later, on July 8.

Vibrio is no joke. All this rain...it seems to favor brackish water.

I feel pretty safe from it here, especially if you can only catch it by swimming in the ocean.

Solid questions we wont get answers to.

I made a trip last year with a burn on my foot the size of a half dollar. Waded from daylight to almost dusk in shin deep mud at some places. Kept wound covered and peroxide when we done and I aint deed.

You wouldn't believe how many debilitating infections I see because of no knowledge of wound care.

A dude I fish with got it when he developed a blister from wading in his wading boots down in Port A. By the time they got back to the camp, his foot looked like he had a walking boot on it and was turning colors. They immediately went to Corpus and supposedly one of the best Vibrio docs in the country works in that hospital and they got him started on antibiotics pretty much when he got there and he still almost lost his foot. Time from infection to trip to hospital was maybe 4 hours.

He did have some liver issues so there always seems to be some underlying reason why these people go to Defcon 5 so quick but if you have an open wound, you better treat that shite with the quickness.

I hear hibiclens is the stuff to carry with ya. Plan on throwing a spray bottle of it in the boat now that I’ve been exclusively wade fishing lately. That and alcohol or peroxide. This shit makes me cringe more than a sewer pipe.

Edit to add: my Dad got a infection just from dipping his hand in and out of a live well. His hand swole up and got all red. Went to the doctor right away and she told him the creases in your hand or cracks from dry skin are entry places for stuff like it.

Glenn had a good point when I told him I was wearing waders when I first started wade fishing more, what about your hands, elbows, and everything else that touches the water. Guess it’s a hibiclens shower!
