  • Enlarged Prostate

That’s what my 10 year old Chessie has. They are going to try an antibiotic and anti inflammatory and see if things are better in a week. If not, probably cancer.

Any of you dealt with this?

        I havent
        But hopefully its nothing
If it is cancer is it something that will limit his life span?
Prostate cancer in men depending on age they just live with it vs trying to kill it i thought

The issue is due to it being enlarged, it is restricting his ability to poop and pee effectively. I won’t go the chemo route if it is cancer. The plan would be to give him a laxative to make passing poop easier. So it would limit his quality a little; but time will tell how much.

I’m in a similar boat. My 7 year old Chessie developed what we thought was a corneal abrasion three weeks ago. Treated it as such but rapidly progressed to glaucoma. Took her to a second vet for another opinion. The other eye started to get affected. Aggressively treated but to no avail. She’s all but blind. In a matter of three short weeks.

Second vet wanted to work her up for Blastomycosis. Took her in Monday for the testing associated with it. Had incidental finding of several enlarged lymph nodes on her X-ray. So now we’re waiting on results of lymphoma testing along with the blastomycosis.

Hoping for good news for your pup too! I’m not ready to break another one in just yet!!

Yes! He has responded well to the meds! Hopefully after the meds are done the issue won’t return. Thanks for asking!

Update. He did well for awhile, then returned to struggling. Went back to the vet recently, this SOB is getting expensive. They saw that for some reason his kidneys are angry, and his prostate is still enlarged. However, he is not backed up with shit, so the enlarged prostate isn’t stopping him from moving his bowels. Gave him some different antibiotics. We have been feeding him cooked ground deer meat and rice for the past few weeks.

I’ve been in Phoenix since last Sunday, but my bride says he is doing great and trying to get her to play with him. 10 years young, good dog and will miss him when I have to send him across that rainbow bridge. This is him with his best take the pic mom pose!!

That’s great news! Hope he stays that road for many more years!

Lymphoma got my 7 year old last week. She couldn’t get around and I had to make the difficult call. I spent weeks preparing myself and it still was hard. Would much rather get horse kicked in the nuts than have to make that call again.

                        Glad he’s on the mend.

My folks had a very unique chessie, and he was the kindest most gentle dog we had growing up. Have lots of fond memories with ole Hondo.
