This one is really hard for me to believe and so a really blind question. Heard yesterday they are collecting DNA samples from the victims' family because some of the bodies are unidentifiable. I have seen a lot of gunshot wounds in animals, including hundreds of .556 wounds. Also have seen a human shortly after being hit with a 357 at close range in the upper chest . From this experience, unless something would be very different, no similar wound on one of my kids would keep me from recognizing them. So, what say ye? BS or not?

Would you rather identify your child lying cold on the slab with his/her face blown apart or from a phone call later?

That said, Ive seen quite a few shot up animals with who knows how many types of bullet, car or arrow wounds. Ive also been in houses and had to turn the fan off to keep brains from flying off the blades and getting on my fresh uniform. There aint no comparison in head wounds to chest wounds. Even FMJ 223 does a number of close enough to the skin or skull

FWIW there is a possibility the rangers are leading it just like they did Sante Fe. They also collected DNA from parents in Sante Fe. I only say that cause a ranger we have trained with was in one of the pictures I saw. He lives outside austin and is their head Leica scanning group guy.

Ok if head shot I'd still reckon a parent could identify how they dressed said victim a few hours earlier

Thanks for the reply Shane. Yes, I agree totally. Wouldn't want to see it & would rather be told by DNA if it coud be done quickly. Wondered mostly about the protocol and y'all who have experience with human wounds to share your knowledge. What you said about the effects if gunshot makes sense.

Also, agree with Ducko. But DNA could confirm.

I would not want any memory of my child in a mourge. I hate going when its some dude I never met

To reply to ducko....the average citizen can't tell 911 what color the car was that just robbed them 90 seconds earlier.

Its got to be a formality at this point. They know what room the kid was in, they know what kids were in there and they sure as hell know which ones didn't make it home.

We're not talking about a high stress situation. We're talking about clothes that momma bought, that she launders regularly and that she dressed her child in a few hours earlier

And what happens is they get it wrong?

There are stages of grieving, and one of those is denial. It can be very powerful and people, being people, can come up with all sorts of reasons to deny. It's OK, it is human nature. A DNA match is just about as certain as it gets, as much as I know.

                        Ok.

Here's another. I'm willing to be 8 out of 10 missing kid calls patrol takes the parents can't remember what kid is wearing.

Then there are the calls where momma calls and 3,4, 5 yr old Johnny is kidnapped or ate by coyotes. Fife shows up and finds kid sleeping under the bed, closet, behind the couch.

                        Happens A LOT

And having to tell a cop what your kid was wearing when they went to a school that's been shot to shit ain't high stress?

I’ve had to identify a body before that was killed in a car wreck. I can’t imagine a parent doing that in a shooting to the face of their child. Wow. Be terrible
