  • Dads in the hospital

    Lymph nodes flared up again.

I have a question for the brain trust. My dad has been my moms primary caregiver since she went into cardiac arrest back in 2008.

We are running into dead ends trying to get her into a nursing home. As much as the children would like to, none of us can afford to quit our jobs to take care of her. They do not have enough money to pay for a nursing home.

Anyone dealt with something like this or have any advice?

My wife's grandfather was put in a nursing home & he didn't have anything. I believe government assistance paid for everything. Not knowing any of it, could could have been medicare etc.
    Prayers Up for The Family.

On the macro perspective, she would need to qualify for Medicaid to go into a nursing home without affecting her monies. But her income and savings would have to be below whatever threshold they mandate. I'm not sure how much that is, but it's very low. Basically, to put it simple, she would have to be at the poverty rate to qualify for Medicaid. Otherwise, she enters a nursing home at the risk of having her entire investment portfolio turned over by lien to the nursing home, in the event she or the estate no longer pays out of pocket or runs out of cash. Her house is also a huge consideration. There is a 5-year provision where she or your dad would have to sign their house over to the kids, or say an executor of their estate. If she enters a home and the 5-year provision has not eclipsed, the nursing home can come after their house.

This is one of those circumstances where someone is better off being poor, because literally almost everything they have accumulated is subject to being taken over. I would highly recommend visiting with a board-certified probate attorney near you. And prayers up!

I have acquaintances that found live in or part-time caregivers, but that is obviously dicey. It would have to be someone you know and trust. Where are you at? I know a possible good candidate in the Nederland area. Sorry you are going through this.

This is what we run into, when we sold My parents house we had to hand over the money to the nursing home.

Thanks all. I was hoping someone would give me a magic number to make all this go away. Roadblocks at every turn.

Aggravating and so hard to find out information.

Dat’s because you are bringing logic into the conversation.

Ask yourself, what would a crack using government sponge with no money do?

My dad had a bronchoscopy today for a lung biopsy. Took 30 samples. Pathologist that was in the room initially thinks it’s lymphoma. Take 5 days or so to have the official results back.

Dad has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Because of his condition with scarring in his lungs due to the IPF diagnosis, treatment options are limited. We will know if and what the treatment plan will be hopefully this evening when we see the oncologist. The oncologist has to approve whether to proceed with the treatment. If not approved, then the option is to take him home on a high level of oxygen until he passes.
