  • Tractor?

I know nothing about size or what I really need. I have 10 acres that I’m always needing something done on. Tired of hiring people to come do stuff. For light duty, driveway maintenance, etc, what do yall recommend? New or used?

If you know how to inspect one & know about them,go used without DEF or emission crap on them. If it were me , I would look around 50 HP.

Buddy of mine is running one of the smaller Kubota diesel machines. Front end loader, 4wd. It’s a little light for heavy lifting and pulling cedars out with the bucket but other than that it’s great. It runs his 6’ brush hog pretty well, and is pretty miserly on diesel.

I got by with a 30ish hp kubota on my 5 acres…but I really only did ditch maintenance and bit of driveway work. Driveway way 600’ish.

45-55hp 4wd is a good tractor size for your size property. Hydrostatic transmission is nice for loader work, and not much of a hindrance regarding mowing on smaller property. If you’re mowing a lot of thick cover or dealing with hills, go higher on the hp scale.

          Fill rear tires with ballast.

Get the heaviest tractor you can get in the desired hp range. In the case of many brands, one models 45hp can be very different from a different models 45hp. Power is rarely the problem, traction is regarding earth moving.

Get a 3rd function for loader, grapple is amazing to have around.

Kubota MX series would be a great one. The Grand L series is decent if you don’t want to jump to MX price.

Kubota dealers and their pricing are absurd though, everyone of them can gargle balls.

Another option is a Kubota TLB(tractor/loader/backhoe). I had an older Kubota L48 that was a good machine. Backhoe attachment was removable in about 5min, and reinstalled in 10. Fairly capable as well although not as convenient positioning wise as a mini-x.

While I absolutely hate doing dirt work with a tractor front loader versus a skid steer, if I could only have one machine on the small farm that can do almost everything the TLB is it.

Heavy for the HP as well.

I’d still recommend the loader 3rd function, and try to at least get a manual thumb for the backhoe, power thumb even better!

Do not bother with the little bitty tractor backhoes. The L48 was 7800lbs, and the minimum I’d recommend. Well balanced machine.

The L48’s are pre-computer as well…nothing to look past! Make sure it has the skid steer quick attach loader, early ones didn’t. Make sure it comes with all the 3-point pieces, expensive if you have to source.

I'm running 40hp 4x4 deere 990 on 200ac. Mostly woods but mowing, disc, tiller and road maintenance. Deer season stuff

25hp 4x4 deere 1025r at the lake and lately 6ac at home.

Only have a grapple on the little tractor and it surprises EVERYONE. I personally see no reason for a tractor the size of the 990 on 5ac. I can mow 6 faster on a 50" zero turn twice before you can cut it once with a 6 foot shredder. Been there done that.

That being said, when the 990 was bought it cost the same as the 1025 did 3 years ago and came with the shredder. The little tractor was FEL and a belly mower. A zero turn is also about 45 mins faster on the 2ac than the belly mower. If you buy used, there are numerous ways to add a grapple and not need a 3rd function.

BIL and I moved this entire pile yesterday with my little tractor and father in laws 30hp with just a bucket. Took about 2. 5 hours

Should add father in laws is a 3005 27.5 hp. Only 3 hp bigger than mine but has another 18" or so of lift in the bucket which mattered yesterday loading a roll off with tree trunk. I'd grab and place in the bucket and they'd pitch it over.

Hes got a back hoe for his and for occasional stump, youpon, brush grabbing. Ive used it plenty digging stumps and Mrs Q just had the cylinders rebuilt. I'll use it again to dig up 6 or 10 stumps at the lake in the fall.

He actually ordered a grapple after watching me for 10 minutes yesterday

if you desire to pay more than you need to buy Kubota or JD

if you just want a tractor all the major brands of compact tractors <50hp are pretty much made all in the same factories in Asia they just change the paint.

one of the more economically compacts around are LS I have a 55hp LS that we have used as an arena drag, post hole dig put out hay tractor for 10 years now. The only issue I have had with it is the 4x4 mechanics are a little wonky and if you run 4x4 on the pavement it will break. It's a pretty cheap and easy fix but it will 100% break.

So, Kubota or JD if you want to pay for paint color, all else if you just need a dependable utility machine. Also for 10 acres anything bigger than 45hp is wasted money

Just get a lightly used L2501 at that point. The frame size and lift capacities are the same, and at least you won’t need to deal with the extra emissions on the 3902. The 2501 turns a 5’ mower deck decently enough. I paid $19k for a 2501 w/200hrs and similar package a few years ago.

The low grade Land Pride shredder and box blades on that package are just that.

I have a 2501 as well, handy piece of equipment but nothing close to the L48.

The line for people wishing they bought less tractor is a short one…

Do not expect to safely move round bales using the loader with the 2501 to 3902 frame machines.

If you think you need the 3902 over the 2501, then the tractor you really need is the Grand L series.

Our big tractor came with a deere cutter it's been cutting on the same parts it came with minus the 3 point bars. Ive forgotten about stumps and sent it 3 feet in the air a couple times. Not sure I'd call it a package cutter cause it's pretty thick.

I bought a 4 footer 2 years ago that's red. Some off brand and she runs it around stuff the bigger one can't get to.

I till say those shorter wheel base tractors ride a little rougher. If your property has any pot holes, you'll find them. Pig rooting in some parts is a PIA on the little one. The hydrostatic Trans helps
